Müller Outstanding Young Scientist Award

This year for IFES 2010, we had an unprecedented level of interest for the Müller Award with over 30 entries. This is most encouraging, and we are expecting a very high level of scientific quality. The panel of judges are currently narrowing down the field to a list of finalists who will present their work during the Müller session on the Monday afternoon of the scientific program.

About the award

1. The award will be made on the basis of the scientific quality of the work presented, if work of sufficient merit is presented. The competition is open to scientists and engineers in the early stage of their careers. Entrants either must currently be graduate / research students, or must have submitted their doctoral thesis (or equivalent) after Friday 31st July 2009. A person may enter the competition repeatedly, until he / she ceases to be eligible.
2. The Müller Award consists of a silver medal, a cash prize and a signed certificate. The winner of the Award is announced at the conference banquet, and entrants are expected to attend the banquet.
3. A person wishing to be an entrant for the Müller Award should submit a normal meeting abstract, in accordance with the proceedings publicised by the Symposium Chairman, and should in addition indicate clearly that he / she wishes to be an entrant for the Müller Award competition. He / she should provide an email address where he / she can be contacted. Each entrant may submit only ONE abstract for the competition. There is no limit on the number of entrants from any given institution.
4. Each entrant is required to make an oral presentation of his / her work, and to submit a related paper for publication in the Symposium proceedings, in accordance with the rules for publication of contributed papers advertised by the Symposium Chairman.
5. The work presented by the entrant must be exclusively or predominantly the work of the entrant, and the abstract must similarly be exclusively or predominantly the work of the entrant, except in so far as help is needed in preparing it in English rather than the entrant’s native language. There are, however, no restrictions or requirements on the number of names on the abstract or on the submitted abstract.
6. Each entrant must submit an electronic version of the paper intended for publication, by 2300 on Friday 4 June 2010. The paper should be prepared in the manner required for abstracts submitted for publication. The electronic file should preferably be in .pdf format (but may be in a .doc format) and should include all relevant material, including tables and figures, embedded within a single file. This file should be sent, as an email attachment, to Dr Krystyna Stiller at stiller@chalmers.se. Anyone who wishes to test, at an earlier date, whether their files can be received successfully is welcome to do so.
7. Each entrant must also ask his / her research adviser / supervisor, or a manager to whom he / she reports, to provide a statement indicating proof of eligibility for the medal and outlining the extent of the entrant’s contribution to the work (no comments are needed on the quality of the work). On request, soon after the submission of the abstract, the entrant must provide an email address at which the adviser / supervisor / manager can be contacted. The Award Panel Chairman will then make direct contact, in order to obtain a confidential statement, which must be received by 2300hrs on Friday 4 June 2010. It is the responsibility of the entrant to check / ensure that this confidential eligibility statement has been sent. 8. In cases where the electronic paper and the statement of eligibility have not both been received by the deadline, the entrant is liable to be disqualified.
9. Entrants will make their presentations in a special conference session, held at a time scheduled by the local organising committee. This session will usually take place on the afternoon of the first day of conference sessions, or on the morning of the second day. Each entrant will have exactly 15 minutes available for his / her oral presentation. A warning will be issued by the session chairman TWO minutes before the end of this period, and the presentation will be terminated abruptly at the end of the 15 minutes (except that allowance will be made for any difficulties with audio-visual equipment). Immediately after the presentation there will be a 5 minute question / comment / answer session.
10. The competition will be judged by a Panel of Judges selected by the IFES International Steering Committee. No person associated with the entrant’s present Institution where he / she carried out relevant research, will be permitted to be part of the Panel of Judges, or to take part in the selection of the Panel. Both the oral presentation and the submitted paper (which will have been made available to the judges) will be taken into account, and the decision of the Panel is final. The Panel has the option of not making an award if they deem that no entrants have presented work of a suitable level.
11. The IFES International Steering Committee reserves the right to change the competition rules at any time; affected competitors will be notified of any change.
